A direct-reading airflow instrument historically used to measure air velocity at grilles and diffusers by sensing the force of moving air on a pivoting vane, with the deflection read on a calibrated scale. Modern hot-wire and vane anemometers have largely replaced it but technicians may still encounter the term.
