A brushless DC motor that uses permanent magnets in the rotor and an internal inverter drive to electronically control commutation, eliminating brushes and providing variable speed capability. ECMs offer significantly higher efficiency than shaded-pole or PSC motors and are widely used in furnace blowers and fan coil units.
