Phase Loss Protection

A protective function in motor overload relays or VFDs that detects the absence of one of the three supply phases and trips the motor off before it sustains damage from unbalanced single-phase operation. Phase loss causes rapid overheating in three-phase motors because the motor attempts to carry full load on only two phases.
