Thermostat

Last updated: March 10, 2026

A thermostat is the control device that monitors indoor temperature and activates the HVAC system to maintain a set temperature. Modern thermostats range from simple mechanical units to sophisticated smart devices with AI-driven learning and remote control.

Programmable thermostats allow users to set different temperatures for different times of day and days of the week, reducing energy consumption when occupants are away or asleep. Smart thermostats (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell T-Series) add Wi-Fi connectivity, remote control via smartphone, and learning algorithms that automatically optimize schedules.

Proper thermostat placement is critical — it should be on an interior wall, away from direct sunlight, drafts, doorways, and heat-generating appliances. The ENERGY STAR program estimates that a programmable thermostat can save homeowners up to $180 per year on energy costs.
