R-449A

Last updated: March 11, 2026

R-449A is a non-flammable HFO-based refrigerant blend designed as a drop-in replacement for R-404A and R-507A in medium and low-temperature refrigeration systems. It offers a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1,282, which represents a 60% reduction compared to R-404A’s GWP of 3,922. This refrigerant has become increasingly popular for retrofit applications in commercial refrigeration.

Technical Specifications

R-449A operates with a normal boiling point of -46.6°C and maintains compatibility with mineral oil and synthetic lubricants. The refrigerant achieves a discharge temperature similar to R-404A, making it suitable for existing equipment with minimal modifications. It operates at pressures comparable to R-404A systems, typically within 250-350 psi operating ranges depending on ambient conditions.

Applications and Benefits

This refrigerant is primarily used in supermarket freezer cases, cold storage facilities, and transport refrigeration. The lower GWP makes it compliant with EPA regulations and current environmental standards. R-449A allows operators to extend equipment life while transitioning toward lower-GWP solutions, providing a practical intermediate step in refrigerant transitions.
