ASHRAE 62.1

Last updated: March 11, 2026

ASHRAE 62.1 sets minimum ventilation and indoor air quality standards for commercial buildings and high-rise residential spaces. This standard specifies outdoor air requirements based on occupancy type, space classification, and building category. It establishes the framework for ensuring adequate fresh air supply to prevent indoor air pollutant accumulation and maintain occupant health.

Ventilation Rate Requirements

ASHRAE 62.1 mandates minimum outdoor air rates of 15 cubic feet per minute (CFM) per person plus area-based rates ranging from 0.06 to 0.30 CFM per square foot depending on space type. Office spaces require 15 CFM per person plus 0.06 CFM per square foot. The standard includes demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) provisions that adjust outdoor air based on CO₂ levels and occupancy sensors to optimize energy efficiency.

Indoor Air Quality and System Design

ASHRAE 62.1 requires air filtration with minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) 13 filters in most applications. The standard addresses outdoor air intake placement, preventing contamination from exhaust sources and adjacent building features. Compliance involves proper ductwork sizing, fan capacity calculations, and makeup air provisions for spaces with exhaust systems, directly impacting HVAC equipment selection and operational costs.
