KNX

Last updated: March 11, 2026

KNX is an open-source international standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3) for home and building automation that enables communication between HVAC controllers and various building systems through a common protocol. KNX systems can control up to 50,000 devices across heating, cooling, lighting, and security functions. Unlike proprietary systems, KNX interoperability allows equipment from different manufacturers to operate on the same network.

Technical Specifications

KNX operates on twisted-pair wiring at 9,600 baud transmission speed with typical network latency under 100 milliseconds. The standard supports 15 area groups with 8 subgroups each, addressing over 65,000 individual devices. Installation requires EIB/KNX cabling rated Category 5 or better, with maximum segment lengths of 1,000 meters per backbone line.

Building Integration and Adoption

KNX is widely adopted in European buildings and increasingly in North America for integrating HVAC with lighting, occupancy detection, and energy management. Systems reduce building energy consumption by 20-30% through coordinated equipment control. Certified KNX devices carry the KNX mark, ensuring compatibility and compliance with ISO 14543-3 standards.
