A pascal (Pa) is the metric unit of pressure measurement equal to one newton per square meter. In HVAC work, pressure is often expressed in pascals, with 1 inch of water column equaling approximately 249 pascals. Understanding pascal measurements is essential for international HVAC standards and modern digital pressure gauges.

Pressure Measurement

One pascal represents very small pressure changes, making it useful for precise HVAC measurements. Typical residential ductwork operates at 10 to 100 pascals of static pressure. A standard inch water column gauge reads approximately 249 Pa, while one millibar equals 100 Pa.

Professional Application

Modern digital manometers display pressure readings in pascals, inches of water column, or millibars depending on configuration. ASHRAE and European standards increasingly reference pascals for consistency. Technicians must convert between units when comparing system specifications or troubleshooting performance issues.
