Energy Code

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Energy codes are mandatory building standards that establish minimum efficiency requirements for HVAC systems, controls, insulation, and equipment in new construction and major renovations. These codes reduce building operational energy consumption by 20-50% compared to pre-code construction. Model codes like IECC (International Energy Conservation Code) are adopted and modified by states and municipalities nationwide.

HVAC-Specific Requirements

Energy codes mandate minimum SEER2 ratings of 14-16 for air conditioners, HSPF2 ratings of 8.5-9.5 for heat pumps, and AFUE ratings of 90-95% for furnaces depending on equipment type. Code requirements include programmable thermostats, duct sealing to achieve less than 15% leakage, proper refrigerant charge verification, and outdoor air economizers in commercial buildings. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) on fans and pumps are required in many jurisdictions to reduce motor energy consumption by 30-50%.

Compliance and Enforcement

Building departments enforce code compliance through design reviews and final inspections. HVAC contractors must demonstrate equipment testing, duct pressurization results, and control system commissioning before occupancy permits are issued. Non-compliance results in project delays, fines, and required corrective work.
