Parallel Rack

A parallel rack is a refrigeration system configuration where multiple compressors operate simultaneously on the same suction and discharge lines to serve multiple evaporators. This arrangement allows for efficient load sharing and redundancy in commercial refrigeration installations. Parallel racks are commonly used in supermarkets and large food service facilities to maintain precise temperatures across different display cases and storage units.

System Configuration

In a parallel rack setup, compressors are connected in parallel to a common suction manifold and discharge line. Each compressor typically has its own capacity rating between 3 and 10 horsepower, though systems may combine multiple units for higher capacity. Check valves prevent backflow between compressors, and each unit operates independently based on pressure demand signals.

Operational Benefits

Parallel racks offer significant advantages including improved efficiency through capacity modulation, where compressors cycle on and off based on cooling demand. If one compressor fails, others continue operating, reducing downtime. These systems also provide better temperature stability in high-volume retail environments where load demands fluctuate throughout the day.
