Solar Pool Collector

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A solar pool collector is the primary component of a solar pool heating system that captures solar radiation and transfers heat directly to circulating pool water. These collectors are specifically designed for the low-temperature applications (75-85°F) typical of residential swimming pools.

Collector Types and Performance

Unglazed plastic collectors are most common for pools, consisting of black polypropylene or ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) tubes bonded to flat headers. These achieve 50-70% efficiency and cost 40-60% less than glazed models. Glazed collectors with copper absorbers suit cooler climates, offering 70-85% efficiency. Collector area typically ranges from 50-300 square feet depending on pool size and desired temperature increase.

Installation Specifications

Collectors mount on roofs or ground structures with south-facing orientation at latitude ±15°. Flow rates between 0.02-0.04 gallons per minute per square foot optimize heat transfer. Most residential installations measure 4 feet by 8-10 feet per collector panel.

Durability

Unglazed plastic collectors last 10-15 years; glazed models extend 20-25 years with proper maintenance. UV-resistant materials and proper installation ensure long service life in outdoor exposure.
