Electrical Raceway

Last updated: March 11, 2026

An electrical raceway is any channel, duct, or enclosed pathway designed to contain and protect electrical wiring and cables. Raceways include conduit, cable trays, wireways, and busway systems. HVAC applications use raceways to organize multiple circuits serving compressors, blower motors, and control transformers while maintaining code compliance and safety.

Technical Details

Raceway selection depends on environment, wire count, and accessibility requirements. Surface-mounted metal raceways work well in indoor mechanical rooms. Underfloor and above-ceiling raceways require fire-rated construction in commercial buildings. NEC Article 300 mandates proper grounding for all metal raceways and specifies support spacing of 3 feet for most types, with hangers required within 12 inches of termination points.

Practical Significance in HVAC

Organized raceways simplify troubleshooting by clearly separating power, control, and communication circuits. Future modifications become safer and easier when existing raceways provide spare capacity. Properly installed raceways protect technicians from accidental contact with live conductors during service work on HVAC equipment.
