ENERGY STAR Fan

Last updated: March 11, 2026

An ENERGY STAR Fan is a ventilation or circulation fan that meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency efficiency standards, consuming at least 25% less energy than standard models while maintaining equivalent airflow. These fans are tested and certified to deliver rated cubic feet per minute (CFM) with lower wattage consumption, reducing operational costs over their 10-15 year lifespan.

Technical Specifications

ENERGY STAR fans must demonstrate airflow efficiency of at least 2.0 CFM per watt in most categories. They incorporate improved motor designs, optimized blade geometry, and reduced friction bearings. Common applications include bathroom exhaust fans, kitchen ventilation, and whole-house ventilation systems rated between 50-400 CFM.

Energy and Cost Impact

A typical ENERGY STAR bathroom exhaust fan uses 3-5 watts compared to 10-15 watts for non-certified models. For a home running ventilation 2-4 hours daily, annual energy savings reach 25-50 kilowatt-hours per fan, translating to $5-10 in reduced electricity costs annually. Certification requires third-party testing and annual recertification to maintain standards compliance.
