Pneumatic Actuator

A pneumatic actuator uses compressed air pressure (typically 15-25 PSI) to move a valve stem or damper, providing reliable, explosion-proof operation in industrial and commercial HVAC systems. These actuators convert air pressure into linear or rotary motion through sealed diaphragms or piston mechanisms. They are widely used in building automation systems where electrical signals may present safety hazards.

Technical Details

Pneumatic actuators operate through 4-20 mA positioner signals that control air proportioning to dual chambers. Standard operating pressure ranges from 15 to 25 PSI for most commercial applications. Diaphragm-type actuators provide stroke lengths from 0.5 to 3 inches, while piston actuators handle higher forces. Response times average 10-30 seconds for full travel.

Applications

These actuators control mixing valves, zone isolation valves, and air dampers in VAV boxes and ductwork. They are preferred in hazardous locations where electrical arcing could create fire risks, such as spray paint facilities or chemical storage areas.

Practical Significance

Pneumatic actuators offer long service life with minimal maintenance when air quality remains high. Their fail-safe design can be configured with spring returns to default positions during system shutdown, enhancing building safety.
