eQUEST

Last updated: March 11, 2026

eQUEST is a graphical interface for DOE 2 that simplifies energy modeling by providing a user-friendly environment for building geometry input, HVAC system specification, and parametric analysis of design alternatives. Developed by James J. Hirsch and Associates, eQUEST was widely adopted by consulting engineers during the 2000s and 2010s for LEED energy modeling and code compliance. It remains in use for quick feasibility studies and baseline energy projections.

Functionality and Workflow

eQUEST enables users to define building layouts, orientations, and construction assemblies through simplified wizards and graphical tools. Engineers specify HVAC equipment, control strategies, and operational schedules to model energy consumption across all building end uses. The program generates detailed annual energy reports by fuel type, end use category, and monthly consumption patterns.

Practical Design Applications

Consulting engineers use eQUEST to perform parametric analyses comparing different chiller types, window specifications, or insulation values to inform value engineering decisions. The software supports energy code compliance demonstrations under IECC and ASHRAE 90.1. While eQUEST requires periodic license renewal and has been supplanted by more advanced tools like OpenStudio, it remains accessible for firms with established expertise and existing project databases.
