Last updated: March 11, 2026

OpenStudio is a free, open-source suite of tools developed by the U.S. Department of Energy that provides graphical interfaces, libraries, and applications for building energy modeling using EnergyPlus as its underlying simulation engine. Released in 2008, OpenStudio has become the industry standard for professional energy modeling, offering capabilities for parametric analysis, optimization, and integration with design tools like Revit and SketchUp.

Features and Integration

OpenStudio includes a graphical interface for building geometry, HVAC system modeling, and simulation parameter definition. The platform contains extensive libraries of ASHRAE baseline systems, weather files, and equipment specifications. Users can perform parametric design exploration to evaluate dozens of design alternatives rapidly. OpenStudio integrates with building information modeling (BIM) software, enabling automated model extraction from Revit and SketchUp.

Professional and Academic Use

Consulting engineers rely on OpenStudio for LEED energy modeling, IECC code compliance, and energy performance standard demonstrations. Researchers use OpenStudio for benchmark studies and validation of new HVAC technologies. The platform supports advanced features including demand-responsive controls, renewable energy integration, and co-simulation with external software. OpenStudio’s active development community, open-source nature, and no-cost licensing have made it dominant in commercial building design workflows.
