An anemometer is an instrument that measures air velocity and airflow rate in HVAC systems and environmental conditions. These devices convert physical air movement into measurable data, enabling technicians to verify system performance, balance air distribution, and diagnose airflow problems. Anemometers are available in multiple styles, each suited to different measurement applications and environmental conditions.

Technical Details

Anemometers measure velocity in feet per minute (fpm), meters per second (m/s), or knots. Measurement accuracy ranges from 3-5% depending on design and calibration. Digital models display readings on LCD screens, often with averaging functions and data logging capabilities. Temperature compensation is standard on quality instruments to ensure accuracy across 32°F to 140°F operating ranges.

HVAC Applications

Technicians use anemometers to measure supply register velocity, verify duct velocity in main runs, confirm exhaust air movement, and balance multi-zone systems. They are essential for commissioning residential and commercial HVAC installations.
