LEED Point

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A LEED Point represents one credit earned toward LEED certification, awarded when a building project meets specific sustainability criteria. Points are accumulated across multiple categories including energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and sustainable materials. Each point contributes to the total score that determines the final certification level.

Scoring Structure

LEED projects can earn points on a scale typically ranging from 0 to 110 total available credits, depending on the LEED version and building type. Projects must achieve a minimum point threshold to qualify for any certification level. Points are distributed unevenly across categories, with energy and water categories often offering more credits than others.

Practical Application

Building teams strategically target high-value points to achieve cost-effective certification. HVAC system upgrades, for example, can earn multiple energy performance points. Project managers prioritize points that align with building goals and budget constraints, creating customized sustainability strategies rather than pursuing every available credit.
