Benzene

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Benzene is a volatile organic compound commonly found in indoor environments as a result of off-gassing from paints, solvents, adhesives, and combustion byproducts. This aromatic hydrocarbon poses significant health risks at elevated concentrations. The EPA classifies benzene as a group A carcinogen with no safe exposure threshold.

Indoor Sources and Concentrations

Indoor benzene concentrations typically range from 0.5 to 5 parts per billion (ppb) but can exceed 10 ppb near sources. Paint strippers, industrial adhesives, gasoline vapors entering buildings, and secondhand tobacco smoke release benzene. New construction materials off-gas benzene for several months after installation.

Health Effects

Chronic exposure to benzene above 1 ppb increases leukemia and other cancer risks. Short-term exposure causes dizziness, headaches, and respiratory irritation. Sensitive populations including children and pregnant individuals face elevated health risks.

HVAC Control Measures

Activated carbon filtration removes 60 to 90 percent of benzene vapors when properly maintained. Increased ventilation rates dilute benzene concentrations to safe levels below 1 ppb. ASHRAE 62.1 compliance with outdoor air requirements helps manage benzene and other VOC concentrations to protect occupant health.
