MERV 8

Last updated: March 11, 2026

MERV 8 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is a standard air filter rating indicating 20-35% effectiveness at capturing particles between 3-10 microns in diameter. MERV 8 filters represent the basic efficiency tier for residential and light commercial HVAC applications. They provide protection against larger dust, pollen, and airborne particles while maintaining low airflow restriction.

Technical Details

MERV 8 filters are measured per ASHRAE Standard 52.2 using a weighted particle size distribution. They capture particles such as pollen, dust mites, and textile fibers (3-10 microns) with 20-35% efficiency. Pressure drop typically ranges from 0.03-0.06 inches of water column at standard airflow, minimizing strain on HVAC systems. Common construction uses polyester or fiberglass media, supporting airflow rates up to 3000 CFM.

Applications and Practical Significance

MERV 8 filters suit homes without severe allergies or air quality concerns and are standard in many residential HVAC systems. They extend equipment life by preventing dust accumulation in coils and fans. Replacement frequency of 30-60 days maintains effectiveness without excessive pressure drop. While ineffective against smaller particles like bacteria (0.3-1 micron), MERV 8 provides cost-effective baseline protection suitable for average household dust control.
