MERV 16

Last updated: March 11, 2026

MERV 16 (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value 16) is a high-efficiency filter rating that captures 95% of particles between 0.3 and 10 microns. These premium filters are used in commercial buildings, hospitals, and residential systems where superior air quality is essential.

Technical Specifications

MERV 16 filters have a rated efficiency of 95% for 0.3-1.0 micron particles and 99% for larger particles, exceeding ASHRAE 52.2 standards. The pressure drop ranges from 1.0 to 2.0 in. w.c., requiring stronger airflow. Filter life typically extends 60 to 90 days at standard use.

Applications

MERV 16 filters are specified for healthcare facilities, laboratories, and cleanrooms where contamination control is critical. They protect sensitive equipment and provide superior protection against fine particles, viruses, and odors in commercial environments.

Installation Requirements

MERV 16 filters cost 40 to 75 dollars per unit and require verification that HVAC systems can handle the increased static pressure. Many residential systems need upgrades or duct modifications to accommodate these filters without straining equipment or reducing airflow.
