Filter Life

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Filter life is the duration a filter remains effective before requiring replacement, typically measured in months or operating hours. Filter life depends on filter type, MERV rating, airflow rate, and indoor air quality conditions.

Duration Factors

Standard MERV 8 filters last 1 to 3 months, MERV 11-13 filters last 60 to 90 days, and HEPA filters last 6 to 12 months. Homes with pets, smokers, or high dust levels reduce filter life significantly. Commercial buildings with heavier HVAC use experience shorter filter life than residential applications.

Signs of Filter Aging

Filters accumulate dirt, dust, and particles over time, reducing efficiency and increasing pressure drop. Visual inspection shows darkening or discoloration of filter media. Reduced airflow or decreased heating and cooling performance indicates filter saturation and impending failure.

Maintenance Schedule

Most manufacturers recommend checking filters monthly and replacing according to visual condition or manufacturer recommendations. Premature replacement wastes money but prevents system strain and maintains air quality. Setting calendar reminders or using smart filter monitoring systems helps maintain regular replacement schedules.
