Cartridge Filter

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Cartridge filters are cylindrical filter elements with pleated media that capture particles through accordion-like folds in synthetic or fiberglass materials. They offer high surface area efficiency, typically delivering MERV ratings from 11 to 13, and are increasingly popular in both residential and light commercial HVAC systems. Cartridge filters combine the benefits of increased dust capacity with relatively low airflow resistance.

Technical Specifications

Standard cartridge filters measure 6 to 12 inches in diameter and 7 to 18 inches in height, with pleated surface areas reaching 40 to 50 square feet per element. They maintain pressure drops between 0.3 and 0.8 inches of water column at rated airflow. Typical lifespan extends 6 to 12 months depending on indoor air quality and system runtime. Most cartridge filters are non-washable and require replacement when dust loading becomes visible or pressure drop increases.

Installation Benefits

Cartridge filter housings typically accommodate 1 to 4 filter elements per unit, depending on HVAC system capacity. Their superior dirt-holding capacity reduces replacement frequency compared to panel filters. The compact cylindrical design fits many modern air handlers and furnaces, making retrofitting straightforward in existing installations.
