Pleated Filter

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Pleated filters feature accordion-like folds in the filter media that dramatically increase surface area compared to flat filters. These folds allow the same physical dimensions to capture significantly more particles before requiring replacement. Pleated filters are available in both panel and cartridge configurations, typically offering MERV ratings from 8 to 13 for residential and commercial HVAC applications.

Surface Area and Efficiency

Pleated design increases effective filtration surface by 5 to 10 times compared to equivalent flat filters. A standard pleated panel filter measuring 20×25×1 inches can achieve the dust-holding capacity approaching that of a 4-inch flat filter. This expanded area reduces airflow restriction, maintaining pressure drops below 0.5 inches of water column while extending filter life to 3 to 6 months for 1-inch versions and 6 to 12 months for 4-inch versions.

Applications and Cost Benefits

Pleated filters suit residential HVAC systems, pet-heavy households, and environments with elevated particulate levels. Their extended replacement intervals reduce annual maintenance costs despite higher per-filter expenses compared to flat panel alternatives. Modern pleated filters incorporate synthetic fibers and antimicrobial treatments to resist mold and maintain performance throughout their operational lifespan.
