Tape Lift Sample

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Tape lift sampling is a quick, non-invasive method that uses sterile transparent tape pressed onto surfaces to collect mold spores and particles for microscopic identification. This technique provides rapid species identification and is widely used for preliminary contamination screening.

Procedure and Analysis

Sterile transparent tape is pressed firmly onto a suspect surface for 10-15 seconds, then removed and mounted on a glass slide with mounting medium. Samples are examined under microscopy at 400-1000x magnification to identify mold spores, fungal structures, and other particulates. Results are reported as presence or absence rather than quantitative CFU counts, making this method useful for preliminary assessment and species identification but less precise for severity comparison across locations.

Advantages and Limitations

Tape lift sampling is cost-effective (typically 50-75 percent less than cultured samples), provides rapid results within 24 hours, and requires minimal equipment for field collection. The method is ideal for identifying mold in accessible locations and confirming contamination suspected from visual inspection. However, results cannot be compared quantitatively, may underestimate contamination in materials with deep mold colonies, and require skilled microscopists for accurate identification.
