Spot Monitoring

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Spot monitoring is the collection of air quality measurements at specific times and locations, typically conducted for hours or days, rather than continuously over extended periods. This targeted approach provides snapshots of conditions under particular circumstances or occupancy scenarios.

Methodology and Process

Spot monitoring involves deploying portable instruments for limited durations, often 4-8 hours or one full business day. Technicians position monitors in representative locations and record data under controlled conditions or during normal operations. Results are logged and analyzed to identify patterns or anomalies during the monitoring window.

HVAC Diagnostic Use

HVAC technicians use spot monitoring to investigate specific complaints, evaluate filter performance before and after changes, or assess air quality in particular zones. It helps verify that maintenance activities improved conditions without requiring permanent sensor installations.

Cost and Practicality

Spot monitoring requires less equipment investment than continuous systems and suits buildings with occasional air quality concerns. Results guide decisions about whether permanent monitoring is warranted and help prioritize more detailed investigations.
