CEE Qualified

Last updated: March 11, 2026

CEE Qualified designation indicates that an HVAC product meets the specific efficiency thresholds and technical requirements established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency for one of its tier levels. Products achieving CEE Qualified status automatically qualify for rebates through many utility companies participating in CEE-coordinated programs. This status goes beyond basic ENERGY STAR certification and represents verified high-efficiency performance.

Technical Requirements

CEE Qualified products must be independently tested by third-party laboratories using standardized procedures outlined in CEE specifications. For air conditioners, qualification typically requires SEER2 ratings of 22 or higher (Tier 2) or 24 or higher (Tier 1). Heat pumps must meet HSPF2 minimums of 9.0 (Tier 2) or 10.5 (Tier 1). Manufacturers submit detailed product data to CEE for verification before equipment receives qualified status.

Market and Incentive Benefits

CEE Qualified equipment qualifies for enhanced utility rebates, often 20-40% higher than ENERGY STAR-only products. Contractors and retailers use CEE Qualified designation in marketing to demonstrate commitment to quality and customer savings. The designation carries significant weight in commercial buildings pursuing energy performance certifications and in residential projects targeting net-zero or near-zero energy goals.
