Through Wall AC

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A through-wall air conditioner is a self-contained cooling unit that mounts directly through an exterior wall, containing the condenser, compressor, and evaporator in a single chassis. These units operate independently without external line sets or separate outdoor units. Through-wall ACs provide efficient cooling for individual rooms without requiring ductwork or extensive installation.

Technical Specifications

Through-wall units typically range from 5,000 to 15,000 BTU capacity. Installation requires a wall sleeve measuring approximately 14-16 inches wide and 5-6 inches tall. Units require 115V or 208-240V electrical service depending on capacity. Cooling efficiency ranges from 10-13 EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio). Most models include built-in thermostats and adjustable louvers for directional cooling.

Installation Process

Installation involves cutting a precise wall opening, inserting the wall sleeve, mounting the unit securely, and sealing exterior gaps with caulk and foam. Proper leveling ensures correct condensate drainage toward the exterior. Electrical connections must comply with local codes and NEC requirements.

Applications

Through-wall units suit apartments, hotel rooms, and small commercial spaces. They offer lower installation costs than ductless systems while providing independent climate control.
