Filter Change

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Filter Change is the replacement of furnace and air conditioning system filters with fresh media to maintain proper airflow and indoor air quality. This is the most frequently performed maintenance task, typically required every 1 to 3 months depending on filter type and indoor air quality.

Filter Types and Specifications

Standard fiberglass filters measure 16 by 25 by 1 inches or 20 by 25 by 1 inches and have MERV ratings from 4 to 8, capturing particles larger than 10 microns. Pleated filters offer MERV 11 to 13 ratings, trapping particles down to 1 to 3 microns. HEPA filters achieve MERV 17 to 20, removing 99.97 percent of particles 0.3 microns and larger. System airflow capacity determines maximum filter MERV rating to prevent excessive static pressure.

Performance Impact

Dirty filters increase system energy consumption by 15 percent and reduce cooling and heating capacity by 10 to 20 percent. Clogged filters force the blower motor to work harder, reducing equipment life by 2 to 5 years. Clean filters maintain proper humidity control and reduce dust accumulation in ductwork.

Service Schedule

Standard filters require monthly inspection and replacement every 1 to 3 months. Pleated filters last 3 to 6 months. Homes with pets, smokers, or multiple occupants need more frequent changes. Filter changes cost 15 to 40 dollars and take 5 to 10 minutes.
