Algae Treatment

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Algae treatment applies biocidal chemicals to condensate pans and drain lines to prevent fungal and algal growth in AC systems. Algae thrives in moist environments and multiplies rapidly in condensate systems, causing drain blockages, odors, and potential health issues. Treatments inhibit growth for 6-12 months depending on product type and climate conditions.

Treatment Methods

Common algae treatments include copper sulfate, enzymatic cleaners, and slow-release pellets placed in drain pans. Copper sulfate is highly effective but requires careful handling due to toxicity concerns. Enzymatic treatments break down organic matter naturally. Pellet treatments release biocides gradually throughout the cooling season, maintaining effectiveness with minimal maintenance.

Application and Effectiveness

Treatments are applied during routine maintenance or emergency drain cleaning situations. A single treatment costs $25-75 and prevents costly drain clearing procedures. Regular biannual treatments combined with proper drain cleaning reduce algae recurrence by 80-90%. Treatment effectiveness depends on pan drainage, humidity levels, and system runtime frequency in specific climates.
