In Row Cooling

Last updated: March 11, 2026

In Row Cooling refers to cooling units positioned directly between or adjacent to server racks in data centers to remove heat at the source. This approach delivers cold air precisely where high-density computing equipment generates the most heat, significantly improving cooling efficiency compared to perimeter-based systems. In Row Cooling typically reduces PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) values to 1.5 or lower.

Technical Details

In Row Cooling units mount horizontally between server rows and use direct air handling to capture hot exhaust. These systems work with hot aisle containment strategies and can be either air-cooled or liquid-cooled. Many facilities integrate In Row Cooling with raised floor systems and variable speed fans to optimize airflow patterns and reduce overall energy consumption.

Practical Applications

Data centers with server densities exceeding 10 kW per rack benefit significantly from In Row Cooling deployment. This method scales effectively from small colocation facilities to large hyperscale operations. By reducing cooling infrastructure demands, organizations lower operational costs and support denser equipment placement, critical for modern cloud computing environments.
