AFCI

Last updated: March 11, 2026

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter, an advanced electrical safety device that prevents fires caused by dangerous electrical arcing in building wiring and equipment. AFCIs represent a significant safety advancement, reducing electrical fire incidents by detecting arc faults that conventional breakers cannot identify. These devices are now mandated in most residential and commercial building circuits.

Detection and Response

AFCIs use sophisticated microprocessor technology to monitor circuit waveforms constantly. They distinguish between normal electrical noise and dangerous arcing patterns. When arc faults are detected, AFCIs disconnect power in 10-100 milliseconds depending on arc characteristics. This rapid response prevents sustained heat buildup that causes fires.

Combination Protection

AFCI protection combines with GFCI technology in combination devices, protecting against both arc faults and ground faults simultaneously. These dual-protection devices reduce receptacle count requirements while maintaining comprehensive safety. Combined devices are ideal for locations requiring both protections.

HVAC Installation Impacts

AFCI-protected circuits may require compatible equipment to prevent nuisance tripping. Some variable frequency drives and electronic controls generate harmonic interference that triggers false trips. HVAC installers must verify equipment compatibility with AFCI circuits. Dedicated circuits for sensitive equipment may provide better reliability when AFCI protection is required.
