Last updated: March 11, 2026

AHRI is the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, a nonprofit organization that develops and maintains performance rating standards for HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Founded in 1921, AHRI publishes standards and certifications used throughout the heating and cooling industry to ensure equipment performance ratings are consistent, reliable, and comparable across manufacturers. These standards are adopted by government agencies and building codes worldwide.

Standards and Certifications

AHRI publishes over 50 standards covering air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, and commercial equipment. Key standards include 210/240 for residential equipment efficiency, 340/360 for commercial cooling, and 1200 for room air conditioners. AHRI Certified ratings appear on equipment nameplates and documentation, verifying manufacturer performance claims through independent testing and verification protocols.

Industry Authority and Application

AHRI standards provide the technical foundation for federal energy labels, building code requirements, and utility rebate programs. Equipment must meet AHRI certification standards to qualify for ENERGY STAR designation. HVAC professionals rely on AHRI data for equipment selection, system design, and performance verification, making AHRI standards essential references in professional practice.
