ARI

Last updated: March 11, 2026

ARI is the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute, the predecessor organization to the modern AHRI that established foundational equipment rating standards for the HVAC industry. Operating from 1953 to 1998, ARI developed the initial methodologies for measuring and certifying cooling and heating equipment efficiency. Many rating standards and testing procedures originated from ARI’s technical work and continue to influence current standards.

Historical Significance

ARI created standardized testing procedures that enabled manufacturers to provide comparable efficiency ratings, advancing the industry from manufacturer-specific claims to standardized metrics. The organization published ARI Directory ratings that became the reference source for contractors selecting equipment. While AHRI replaced ARI in 1998, ARI’s foundational work established rating principles still used today.

Legacy and Current References

Older equipment documentation may reference ARI ratings rather than current AHRI certifications. HVAC professionals occasionally encounter equipment labeled with ARI ratings, particularly in retrofit projects. Understanding ARI’s historical role helps technicians interpret legacy equipment documentation and recognize the evolution of efficiency standards from ARI’s 1950s methodologies to modern AHRI 2024 standards.
