ASHRAE 90.1 2022

Last updated: March 11, 2026

ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2022 sets minimum energy efficiency requirements specifically for commercial buildings, including new construction and major renovations. This standard covers HVAC systems, lighting, envelope design, and renewable energy integration with more rigorous performance metrics than previous editions. It serves as the basis for many state and local commercial energy codes.

HVAC-Specific Requirements

The 2022 edition mandates SEER2 ratings (the new seasonal efficiency metric) for air conditioning systems, typically requiring 14-15 SEER2 for most applications. Variable refrigerant flow (VRF) systems must meet heightened efficiency standards. Mandatory commissioning, complex controls requirements, and energy recovery ventilation specifications apply to most commercial systems. Ductless heat pump adoption is encouraged through performance incentives.

Implementation Standards

ASHRAE 90.1-2022 requires energy modeling, demand-controlled ventilation, and advanced system controls. Commercial HVAC contractors must verify equipment meets SEER2 standards and implement proper commissioning protocols. The standard directly impacts equipment selection, system design, and ongoing maintenance requirements for commercial properties.
