Bearing Fluting

Last updated: June 9, 2026

Washboard-like grooves worn into motor bearing races caused by high-frequency circulating currents induced by VFD switching, which arc across the thin oil film in the bearing. Bearing fluting causes premature bearing failure and is mitigated by shaft grounding rings, insulated bearings, or common mode filters.
