Condenser

Last updated: March 10, 2026

The condenser is the outdoor unit of a split air conditioning or heat pump system. In cooling mode, it releases heat that has been absorbed from inside the building by the refrigerant. It contains three main components: the compressor, the condenser coil (through which refrigerant flows), and the fan (which blows outdoor air across the coil to dissipate heat).

Condensers require adequate clearance on all sides (typically 12-24 inches) for proper airflow. Obstructed condensers run hotter, work harder, consume more energy, and fail sooner. They should be cleaned annually and kept free of debris, leaves, and vegetation.

In heat pump systems, the condenser operates in reverse during heating mode — absorbing heat from outdoor air rather than releasing it. Most homeowners refer to the entire outdoor unit as ‘the AC unit’ regardless of whether it’s a straight-cool condenser or a heat pump.
