Dehumidifier

Last updated: March 10, 2026

A dehumidifier removes excess moisture from indoor air, reducing relative humidity to a target level (typically 35-50% RH). High indoor humidity promotes mold growth, dust mites, wood rot, and general discomfort — and makes air feel warmer than it actually is.

Whole-house dehumidifiers integrate directly with the HVAC system and treat all air passing through the system. Portable dehumidifiers handle individual rooms or basements. In humid climates, a standalone dehumidifier can supplement the AC system, which removes some humidity but may not reduce it sufficiently on mild days when less cooling is needed.

Signs your home needs a dehumidifier: condensation on windows, musty odors, visible mold, wood warping, allergy symptoms worsening indoors, or measured humidity consistently above 50%. ENERGY STAR-rated dehumidifiers are significantly more efficient than standard models.
