EnergyPlus

Last updated: March 11, 2026

EnergyPlus is a free, open-source whole-building energy simulation engine developed by the U.S. Department of Energy that models heating, cooling, lighting, and electrical energy use with hourly or sub-hourly resolution. Released in 2001, it has become an industry-standard modeling platform used by engineers worldwide for design optimization and energy code compliance. EnergyPlus handles complex interactions between building envelope, HVAC systems, controls, and operational schedules.

Technical Capabilities

EnergyPlus performs simultaneous simulations of heat transfer through building surfaces, airflow patterns, and thermal zone interactions across multiple time steps per hour. The engine accepts detailed HVAC component models including chillers, boilers, fans, controllers, and demand-controlled ventilation logic. It integrates weather data from typical meteorological year (TMY) files containing 30 years of historical climate information.

Industry Adoption

EnergyPlus serves as the underlying simulation engine for graphical interfaces including OpenStudio, DesignBuilder, and Revit plugins. Engineers rely on EnergyPlus modeling to demonstrate compliance with IECC energy codes, ASHRAE 90.1 standards, and local green building requirements. The platform’s open-source nature enables continuous updates, integration with research institutions, and customization for specialized HVAC applications.
