Equipment Startup

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Equipment startup is the controlled activation and verification of an HVAC unit after installation or repair to confirm all systems function according to manufacturer specifications. This process distinguishes normal operation from malfunction before equipment becomes integrated into customer service. Proper startup procedures establish performance baselines and prevent warranty disputes.

Technical Details

Technicians verify power supply voltages match equipment ratings (typically 208-240V or 277-480V for commercial units), measure amperage draw against nameplate specifications, and confirm compressor operation within 10 percent of rated values. They test safety switches, check thermostat signal transmission, and verify proper refrigerant circulation by monitoring pressure and temperature at key points.

Practical Significance

Equipment startup identifies installation defects before systems operate under load. Recording equipment parameters at startup provides baseline data for future diagnostics. Proper startup documentation supports warranty claims and protects contractors from liability if equipment fails shortly after installation.
