ETL Listed

Last updated: March 11, 2026

ETL Listed indicates that equipment has been tested and certified by Intertek, a third-party testing organization, and meets applicable safety standards for electrical and mechanical products. ETL certification carries the same legal authority as UL certification in North America and is accepted by building codes and authorities. ETL testing covers safety, performance, and compliance with relevant standards specific to product category.

Certification Process

Intertek evaluates equipment design, conducts safety testing, and verifies manufacturing quality control procedures. ETL testing mirrors UL protocols for HVAC equipment, ensuring equivalent safety outcomes. The ETL mark appears on product nameplates alongside specific standard numbers (UL 207, UL 1995, etc.). Manufacturers undergo initial testing and subsequent follow-up audits to maintain certification status. Testing reports document compliance with construction, electrical safety, and performance requirements.

Market Recognition

ETL Listed products are widely accepted by inspectors, contractors, and building officials throughout North America. ETL certification often provides cost advantages compared to UL testing due to competitive pricing. Equipment with ETL marks meets the same rigorous safety criteria as UL-listed alternatives. Technicians should recognize ETL markings as equivalent to UL certification for HVAC and solar applications. Both certifications satisfy code requirements for legal installation.
