A shell-and-tube or shell-and-plate evaporator in which the refrigerant fills the shell side and chilled water flows through the tubes, allowing the entire tube surface to be wetted with boiling refrigerant for high heat transfer efficiency. This configuration is common in large centrifugal and screw chillers.
