Fluorescent Leak Dye

Last updated: March 11, 2026

Fluorescent leak dye is a visible tracer chemical added to refrigerant systems that glows under ultraviolet light, enabling technicians to identify and pinpoint refrigerant leaks visually. This dye type is chemically identical to UV dye and represents the same category of leak detection product. Fluorescent dyes have become standard in professional HVAC diagnostics for locating leaks that resist other detection methods.

Injection and Visibility

Technicians inject fluorescent dye through the low-side service port in quantities typically ranging from 0.5 to 2 ounces, depending on system size and type. The dye circulates with the refrigerant oil throughout the entire system. Under UV light at 365 nanometers, dye molecules at leak points fluoresce in bright colors ranging from green to red, depending on the specific dye formulation. Visibility remains high even in dusty or outdoor environments.

Service Applications

Fluorescent dye is essential for diagnosing slow leaks, intermittent leaks at vibration points, and leaks in locations inaccessible to other detectors. The dye remains effective for months or years, allowing repeated inspections if leaks recur. Technicians use UV flashlights to inspect connections, welds, and component seals systematically. Dye compatibility with system oils must be verified to prevent adverse reactions or performance impacts.
