Green Power Purchase

Last updated: March 11, 2026

A Green Power Purchase is the acquisition of electricity from renewable sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, or geothermal generation. This can occur through direct contracts with renewable energy producers or via utility green energy programs. Green power purchases reduce reliance on fossil fuels and lower greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity consumption.

Purchase Methods

Direct power purchase agreements (PPAs) connect buyers with renewable energy facilities for 10 to 25-year periods. Utility-administered green power programs offer renewable energy at premium rates. Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) enable virtual green power procurement without physical delivery.

HVAC and Building Applications

Building owners integrating solar thermal systems or ground-source heat pumps pair these technologies with green power purchases to achieve comprehensive decarbonization. This dual approach optimizes heating, cooling, and domestic hot water efficiency.

Practical Significance

Green power purchases reduce a facility’s carbon footprint by 200 to 400 kg CO2 per MWh compared to grid electricity. Many utilities offer green power at 2 to 5 percent premium pricing. Combined with efficient HVAC systems, green power purchases significantly lower operational environmental impact and can improve corporate ESG ratings.
