High Efficiency Electric Home Rebate

Last updated: March 11, 2026

The High Efficiency Electric Home Rebate is a federal incentive program providing direct rebates to homeowners who install electric heating and cooling systems, water heaters, and other electrification equipment. This program supports the transition away from fossil fuel-based systems toward all-electric homes powered by renewable energy sources.

Eligible Equipment and Rebate Amounts

Qualifying equipment includes electric heat pumps (air source and ground source), induction cooktops, electric water heaters, and heat pump water heaters. Rebate amounts range from $250 to $8,000 per system, with enhanced incentives for low-income households earning up to 80 percent of area median income. Equipment must meet ENERGY STAR certification standards and be installed by licensed contractors.

Environmental and Economic Benefits

Switching from gas furnaces and air conditioning to electric heat pumps reduces household carbon emissions by approximately 5 to 10 tons annually. Electric systems typically operate at 300 to 400 percent efficiency compared to 80 to 90 percent for gas furnaces, resulting in lower energy bills and improved grid stability.

Application Process

Homeowners apply directly through their state energy office or designated administrator, submitting equipment specifications, contractor information, and income verification for rebate qualification.
