IPLV

Last updated: March 11, 2026

IPLV (Integrated Part Load Value) measures chiller efficiency across varying load conditions, reflecting performance from 100% down to 25% capacity operation in a single metric. This rating is specifically designed for commercial chillers and central cooling systems that rarely operate at full capacity. IPLV provides more realistic efficiency predictions than full-load ratings for most applications.

Calculation Methodology

IPLV combines efficiency measurements at 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% of design load using weighted averaging, with each load condition assigned specific percentage contributions. Commercial chillers typically achieve IPLV ratings between 15 and 30 kW per ton, depending on compressor type and design. The metric accounts for real-world building loads that fluctuate throughout the day and season.

Commercial System Selection

Facility managers and engineers use IPLV to select chillers that optimize energy consumption for actual operating profiles. IPLV is particularly valuable for facilities with variable cooling demands, as most buildings operate below full capacity 80% of the time. Comparing IPLV ratings alongside full-load efficiency metrics provides comprehensive equipment evaluation for commercial HVAC projects.
