Manual J

Last updated: March 10, 2026

Manual J is the ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) industry standard for calculating the heating and cooling load of a residential building. It determines exactly how much HVAC capacity a home needs — preventing the common problem of oversized or undersized equipment.

A Manual J calculation accounts for: square footage, insulation R-values, window size and orientation, local climate data, ceiling height, number of occupants, infiltration rates, and duct losses. The result specifies the exact BTU/hr required for both heating and cooling.

Proper Manual J calculations are required by most building codes for new construction and major HVAC replacements. Oversized equipment short-cycles (turns on and off too frequently), wastes energy, fails to properly dehumidify, and wears out faster. Always insist on a Manual J before replacing your HVAC system.
