Mechanical Shaft

A mechanical shaft is a vertical cavity that runs through multiple building stories, housing vertical runs of ductwork, piping, and electrical conduits serving different floor levels. This structural element allows efficient distribution of utilities from central mechanical systems to individual floors while saving valuable floor space. Shafts are essential in tall buildings where horizontal routing would be impractical.

Fire Safety Requirements

Mechanical shafts must be enclosed in two-hour fire-rated construction and include fire dampers rated for 1.5 hours per building code requirements. Openings into occupied spaces require dampers that close automatically in case of fire. Annual inspection of fire damper operation is mandatory in commercial buildings.

Design Benefits

Vertical shafts eliminate the need for numerous horizontal distribution paths, reducing pressure drop and improving system efficiency. Single shafts serving 10 to 20 floors can reduce ductwork by 30 percent compared to distributed systems. Proper sizing and access doors every two to three floors enable efficient maintenance and future system modifications.
