Minimum Pipe Velocity

Last updated: June 9, 2026

The lowest refrigerant gas velocity in a suction or discharge line sufficient to carry entrained oil back to the compressor, typically around 700 to 1,000 feet per minute in horizontal runs and 1,500 feet per minute in vertical risers. Systems must be designed to maintain minimum velocity across the full range of compressor unloading.
