Motor testing encompasses multiple diagnostic procedures including current draw measurement, insulation resistance testing, and winding continuity checks to verify motor condition and predict failure risk. Comprehensive motor testing combines electrical measurements with visual inspection to determine whether a motor requires maintenance, repair, or replacement. This systematic approach prevents unexpected downtime and safety hazards.

Technical Details

Motor tests include measuring running current against nameplate ratings, checking phase balance to within 10 percent on three-phase motors, testing insulation resistance with a megohmmeter at 1,000V, and verifying bearing temperature with infrared thermometers. Locked rotor current measurements establish baseline data for future comparisons. Vibration analysis and sound inspection supplement electrical testing. Tests must be conducted at consistent line voltages and temperatures for valid comparison.

Applications in HVAC

Technicians perform motor tests during commissioning, as part of preventive maintenance schedules, and when unusual noise or vibration occurs. Tests verify proper installation of replacement motors.
